Net Metering in Pakistan 2024

What is Net-Metering?

Net metering is a billing method that enables consumers to sell any excess electricity they generate from renewable sources, such as solar panels, back to the grid. Consumers receive credits on their electric bills from the utility company.

And then at the end of the month, the utility company calculates the difference between imported units (electricity used from the grid) and exported units (electricity that is transferred to the grid through a solar inverter ) and sends you the bill.

How to apply for net metering in Pakistan?

Solar System Installation:

Before applying for a net metering system in Pakistan, it’s necessary to have a solar PV system at your home.

Eligibility criteria:

Before applying for a net metering license you must have :

  • 3-Phase Connection (If you do not have a 3-phase connection, the company will apply for it on your behalf. You may incur additional charges.)
  • The capacity of your solar PV system is within the permissible range.
  • Installation of PV system by AEDB Solar Company.

Connect With an AEDB Registered Solar Company

To initiate the process of net metering, the initial step is to reach out to a solar company that is registered with AEDB. As per NEPRA regulations, consumers are not allowed to apply for net metering directly. Hence, a registered solar company must be involved in the application process. To obtain a list of solar companies registered with NEPRA, visit the official NEPRA website

Document Preparation:

Then you get in touch with a solar company, they may ask you to provide certain documents.

  • a copy of your National ID Card
  • a copy of your latest electricity bill
  • proof of property ownership or a long-term lease agreement.

Application Submission:

The company will submit the application along with the necessary documents for further procedures.

Inspection and NOC Issuance:

DISCO representatives will inspect your solar PV system for compliance with technical requirements.
DISCO will issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for net metering installation upon satisfactory inspection.

Agreement Signing:

It is important to establish a Net Metering Agreement with the electricity distribution company (DISCO) to clearly define net metering terms and conditions, including billing procedures, credit policies, and maintenance responsibilities.

Meter Installation:

DISCO will install a net meter at your premises to measure the flow of electricity in both directions (grid-to-consumer and consumer-to-grid).
The net meter will be connected to the existing grid connection. This meter is also called a bi-directional or green meter.

Net Metering Activation:

After installing and connecting the net meter, you can activate net metering to offset your electricity usage with excess solar energy.

Billing and Monitoring:

DISCO will provide periodic statements showing your electricity consumption, excess solar energy, and any net credits or charges.
Regularly monitor your net metering account to track your energy usage, savings, and environmental impact.

Net Metering Billing Tariff:

The net metering unit is calculated by subtracting the excess solar generation from the electricity consumed. In this case, the net metering unit is 500 kWh.
